Honestly, Leslie, it's going to be a long uphill battle. You are going to be super-annoyed with all the people who want you to fail. There is a sea of red tape, endless road blocks. So, yeah, I don't know. I don't know.

"Rock Show" is the season finale in the first season of the NBC television series Parks and Recreation. It originally aired on May 14, 2009 to 4.25 million viewers.

Synopsis[]

Leslie's mum sets her up on a date but pretends it's a business meeting, Ann kicks Andy out of the house after she learns he kept his casts on longer than necessary, and Leslie has the opportunity to hook up with Mark again but turns him down.

Storyline[]

The Parks and Recreation Department throw a celebration for Andy having his leg casts removed, and Ann invites everybody to a local bar to hear Andy's band play for the first time since he broke his legs. Leslie is disappointed she cannot go, because her mother, Marlene Griggs-Knope, has set up a business meeting with a local "political bigwig", George Gernway, the city manager of the neighboring town of Eagleton, who can help with the park project. Meanwhile, Mark is congratulated by a fellow city planner for getting a bothersome speed bump lowered two inches. He isn't sure how to feel about that.

While at the hospital handing out flyers for the rock show, Ann learns from Dr. Harris that Andy delayed getting his casts removed for two weeks, hence why he's been especially clumsy while relearning how to walk. Realizing to her increasing anger that he did this because he wanted her to keep waiting on him hand and foot for a little bit longer, Ann begins reevaluating her relationship with Andy. At her dinner with George, Leslie realizes the meeting is actually a blind date set up by her mother. George, who tells the documentary camera crew he is getting "very positive signals", agrees to go with Leslie to the bar after dinner to hear Andy play.

At the bar, Mark is the only one there from town hall without a date: Tom is with his attractive surgeon wife Wendy, Ron is dating his ex-wife's sister Beth, and April is with her gay boyfriend. Noticing Ann is angry with Andy, Mark makes a pass at her, but Ann angrily rejects him. Leslie and George show up and are mocked by Tom. After the gig ends, Andy tries to throw an encore to stay as long as possible to avoid a fight with Ann, but she insists they leave. Everyone else also goes, including George, who was falling asleep. Leslie is about to go home as well, disappointed in her bad night, but an intoxicated Mark asks her to stay and have a beer with him. Leslie's spirits are lifted and she notes the parallels between tonight and that night from five years ago. When the bar closes, the two grab some beers and continue to drink by the pit. After sharing some jokes, Leslie asks Mark whether he thinks the park will ever be made. Mark pragmatically replies that she'll have an uphill battle full of bureaucratic red tape and people who will just want her to fail out of pettiness ahead of her, but she remains determined to go do it anyway.

Meanwhile, Ann confronts Andy with what she's found out. Andy admits to delaying getting his casts removed because he liked it when she served him food. Ann throws him out, and Andy sees Mark kiss Leslie. Leslie pulls away from him, realizing they're repeating that night from five years ago. As Mark gets up to leave, he slips and falls into the pit. An amused Andy informs Ann of the accident, who rushes out to help Mark while Andy goes back inside and plops back down on the couch to watch TV and eat chips.
